How to Start Over

Starting over is rarely fun. It can be emotionally taxing. It can be mentally exhausting. But it can also be a tremendous gift.

Jesus Christ Himself is grace (Titus 2:11) Through Him, we are now under grace (Romans 6:14) and because of this, we get to continually experience transformation and renewal. That’s right, we get to start over. What a gift indeed!

So, how exactly can we start over? Perhaps not surprisingly, the most important factor to successfully starting over is grace itself, choosing to practice grace—time and time again, as many times as necessary—both with ourselves and with others. Once we’ve committed to practicing grace, honestly, the rest is much easier.

  • A picture is worth 1,000 words. So, let it speak volumes. Picture in your mind’s eye where you want to end and possible ways you can actually get there.
  • Keep the picture framed by reality. Even red flags look fine when you’re looking through rose-colored glasses. So, don’t create frustration and failure for yourself from the get-go. Instead, keep it real so that you can ultimately making it a reality.
  • Set small goals and maintain reasonable expectations moving forward. It’s unfair—and certainly ungracious—to expect the impossible from anyone, including yourself. So start small, be specific and keep your expectations reasonably—graciously—set.
